Good morning. Welcome to hell.

You are listening to the sad news concerning Japan, the tsunami, and the nuclear meltdowns. As luck would have it, this week you discover (in class, from a book, or some random Internet surfing) that the weather systems around Japan this time of year could very easily draw irradiated particles across the largest grain producing farms of China, India, and Australia which, among other terrible things, would destroy their crops for the foreseeable future. Even with the US cutting back its livestock in following years, the price of grain will increase dramatically and starvation across the globe will sore.

You believe your calculations and geeky friend runs your numbers through a weather simulator to confirm them. It's going to happen. Obviously, this information is being withheld from the general populace while governments make hard decisions for the future.

Though you are safe from direct exposure to radiation, the world will be a different place soon. There will be starvation on a scale never before known; there will be mass exodus from countries like India and China; borders will be closed and wars fought over resources; the stock exchanges will collapse and prices of all kinds of goods and services will rise.

Assuming you have several days before the facts hit the news, what preparations, if any, will you make? What sort of concerns do you have? What kind of supplies and equipment will help you?

Heh...good luck, friend. ;)

First thing I'd do would be cursing the monetary economy to hell. It is because someone gets richer by building idiotic nuclear plants instead of natural energy plants. But since my curses don't hold much weight I would: Go to 'clarks die' and buy some useful tools if I lack any. Then I'd stock my place with long lasting food. I would also buy equipment for tracking, traveling and such. From this day I would start to accumulate drinking water in all sorts of containers which I never use anyway. At this point I would curse some more. Sadly my garden is a concrete square(what is the point of these gardens in UK?!) so I couldn't grow anything. Then I would start a major research in to current political situation, predictions for future and ways of survival - I would still have a couple of days for that. That is a draft of my plans, all done just before going to university, any suggestions? Do you too consider it interesting that we had all those discussions and now Japan has it for real? I really wonder how greedy someone was to build nuclear plants on such grounds, I think they would do fine with solar & wind - especially since most of Japan are unpopulated mountains, so there would be plenty of space for that.

It is interesting. The thing is though, there are disasters happening every year. It only becomes a crisis when it happens where you or your family live. Eventually, all places will be the scene of a catastrophic event where many die. All you can hope for is that it's not in your lifetime.

On the morning of 9/11 (Hawaii time), my girlfriend-at-the-time's daughter came in and woke us up early. "We're being attacked," she said, "America is being attacked." I stomped out of bed reassuring her that something like that could never happen. Then I stood in the kitchen looking at the TV in the next room as it displayed smoking buildings.

The other day my dad called me and said, "Are you watching the news on that tsunami in Japan? Yeah? Did you hear about the nuclear meltdowns happening and all the radiation?" 'Fuck,' I thought, 'Another insane situation!' Fortunately there isn't a global risk, but my first couple of minutes of consciousness was spent checking my Bug Out Bag and then wondering, 'Why bother?' If the breadbaskets of the world are irradiated, it's the end to everything we know. My puny preparations would be pretty pointless.

I really don't know what I'd do in this situation. If you have seen Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (or the newest Star Trek movie) you might be familiar with this no-win scenario. My only hope would be to somehow survive until the radiation could be removed and new harvests test safe--which might take 2-3 years.

Even if I could procure a bunch of seed and make a deal with a farmer some place, someone else would come by around harvest time and take it. There will always be meaner, better trained, and more heavily armed people willing to take what other's have during a crisis.

by now I think it fits that I reveal my secret and seemingly ridiculous plan to live forever. I repeat: SEEMINGLY.

...anyway, it would just be so much nicer if people would stop contributing to disaster count.

Okay--*Sigh*--here is what I would try to do: I would hide, just like all the crazy survivalists talk about. :P

I would move to a colder, less hospitable climate (but above freezing during winter) and then bunker in. The place would need its own well water with a water table that wouldn't be exposed to contamination by the nearest town. Most everyone else will be moving away from such a place, migrating to warmer climates. The house needs to be very isolated and have a large basement. I would booby-trap the house, conceal the basement, and live down there with all my supplies. Whatever I couldn't fit I would put in barrels and conceal on the property with a map to relocate later. I would only leave the house at night to empty my toilet and check my traps. I would practice extreme light discipline at all times.

I would spend all my savings and max my credit cards out to get the following:

I just realized I missed our survival conversations... :-O

Quick! Your entire region has suffered contamination of its water treatment facilities due to a terrorist attack. Water has been turned off and authorities won't be able to bring in sufficient water for 7 days. If you and those you live with don't have water within 3 days you will suffer organ failure and die. You replenish at least 2 liters a day usually and can survive on 1 liter or even less with conservation.

What water (or other liquids) do you have on hand? Do you have a source of water near to you? A way to filter it? How many others know of this location and will be competing for the same resource? Where else can you get moisture? What tools do you have available? What problems do you foresee and what kind of solution do you have for them?

Have an answer to your survival or (hypothetically) die! *sinister music*

Gosh! I was nearly killed in my nightmare calamities and I wake up to this! What can I say, first thing I'd do is smash my boiler open and take all the water out of it. If water was contaminated and they cut it off, my boiler should hopefuly contain good old water that never heard of terrorists. If it would be poisoned, that would be the first chance for me to die. If I wouldn't die then I'd use my shower cover to create rain collecting device. It likes to rain in UK so that would be a good solution. I fortunately have some apples which are rich with juices(plain luck) but I don't have much water stored, I usually rely on tap water. Note: need to change that. Since boiler could be risky and rain might not fall I would salt my food like crazy - salt helps to hold water within body. If all else fails I could use moisture contained within my father's BLOOD buhaha. Oh, and there is some ice in the fridge... poor dad.

From one nightmare to another, huh?

Your answer was good stuff! Particularly the water heater (boiler) and water catchment. There is actually a drain valve at the base of the water heater where you can remove quite a lot of water. (I'm just assuming that the UK equipment is something similar to the US'.) The same holds true for the tank behind your toilet bowl, that's clean tap water. You also definitely luck out with the rainy weather too.

To my knowledge salt does not prevent dehydration although it is needed when drinking water to replace salts lost during dehydration. The requirement salts would be something like a single gram though regular table salt does NOT have the required minerals in it. Start using sea salt if you aren't already. Though salt does does help your body retain water (bloat) but it does it by destabilizing the osmotic balance between the concentrations inside of our cells and the outside, literally shriveling up the cells and raising blood pressure - and increasing thirst! This hypertonic state is actually a form of dehydration called Hypernatremia and can result in a cerebral edema if you rehydrate too fast. (It would take slow rehydration over 48 hours to do it safely.) Though I am no expert on salt, I think super-salting your food would kill you faster than having no water at all.

Some other good survival behaviors include:
- Rest in shade as often as possible.
- Do not eat food. Digestion uses up a great deal of water and you can live up to 3 weeks without any nutritional intake.
- Tie absorbent material on your legs and walk through bushes in the early morning to collect dew to squeeze out later.
- Find other sources of dew, such as leaves and containers.
- Collect liquids such as urine and rig up a semi-sealed condensation collector outside. (I can't vouch for the taste.)

Source: I got my info about Hypernatremic Dehydration at [link]

Now, beware and prepare for the next hypothetical disaster!
